SEF announces new online service - Automatic renewal of Portuguese residence permit for foreign active citizens. SEF estimates that approximately 90,000 foreign nationals will be granted a Portuguese residence permit under this new service.
Now, instead of going to the SEF office in person, a foreign citizen only needs to apply at the SEF Online Portal to go through the procedures for automatic renewal of a Portuguese residence permit.
The applicant will proceed with the application for renewal of the Portuguese residence permit by registering an account on the SEF Online Portal and following all the necessary steps to apply for the automatic renewal of the resident permit.
The applicant must pay the fee for applying for the automatic renewal of the residence permit within 48 hours of the application. SEF will then perform a check of the relevant databases (crime, tax, and social security) and send a confirmation notice. Residence permits will be sent to the applicant's Portuguese address.
However, if the applicant is an academic / volunteer residence permit holder; residence permit for investment activities; permanent residence permit; residence card (for family members of a European Union citizen); the permanent residence certificate (for EU citizens) will not be able to use this new service, they have to go directly to the SEF office.
In this context, SEF recalled that: “Visas and documents related to the stay of foreign citizens in national territory that expired on February 24 are accepted, in the same terms, until October 30 this year” within the scope of the decree-law 22/2020 of 16 May, which alters the exceptional and temporary measures relating to the pandemic of the covid-19 disease.
